TVNZ’s Top Earners
A sharp rise in the number of high earners at TVNZ is revealed in the crown-owned television company’s 2011-12 annual
report.
The number of employees in the $100,000-$120,000pa bracket has jumped from 73 to 87, an increase of just under 20% in a
year.
Of the 87 employees in that salary range, 56 earned $100,000-$110,000 and 31 were on $110,001-$120,000. The comparable
figures in 2010-2011 were 41 and 32, hinting at a big boost in numbers and pay for the broadcaster’s middle management.
At the top of the tree, TVNZ’s chief executive, Kevin Kenrick, starts out on $810,000-$820,000. Formerly with Telecom
and House of Travel, Kenrick took over in May from Rick Ellis who got TVNZ’s top salary up to a record $910,000-$920,000
before crossing the Tasman to head Telstra’s digital media division.
Salaries at TVNZ rose steadily after Ellis began his second stint as chief executive in 2006 on a salary in the
mid-$600,000s. The number of employees on $100,000-plus a rose 34% from 152 in 2006-2007 to 204 in 2011-12.
The latest annual report also reveals that TVNZ paid out $1.5 million in compensation to 34 employees whose employment
was terminated in the 2011-12 year, down from the $2.1 million paid to 44 redundant staffers the previous financial
year.
