Asset sales march in Auckland ends in beheading

Thousands marched in Auckland and around the country today in protest against the National Government’s plans to
partially sell the state owned power companies.
The largest march was in Auckland where thousands assembled outside Britomart train station for a march that moved up
Queen Street and finished opposite Aotea square.
The protesters carried effigies of John Key, Bill English, and other while chanting “Aotearoa is not for sale.”
The effigies were then beheaded during the final speeches.
The peaceful anti-asset sales march concluded with a general assembly.
The protesters held a vote on three propositions; cause the investments to look as unattractive as possible to
potential investors; to boycott Mercury Energy and it’s parent company Mighty River Power; and to declare investment all
of the state owned assets unethical and socially irresponsible. All propositions passed the informal assembly.
Protesters carried signs that read, ‘Get your hand off it John (sic),’ ‘Parliament. Imperialist fascist convention centre,’ ‘only loosers sell assets (sic).’
