Former Prime Minister and Ambassador Jim Bolger made a flying visit to Washington D.C. He is still a commanding presence, and retains many friends and admirers in the U.S. capital. One of his activities included a speech to the US-NZ Council at the University Club on March the 24th. He is still the Chairman of the Council, while William J. Maroni is the President of the US branch of the organizations. Its main focus is business and trade. Many of its members were meeting in Christchurch at the time of the big earthquake; an experience which brought them very close together. It also strengthened their resolve to help the people of Christchurch.
Mr. Bolger gave a wide ranging address. He said this is a time of great change, and the world must adapt. He said one threat is the possibility the economy of the Pacific region might slow down. He also said there may come a time when there is not enough water in the world. He also said the world must find a way to feed the billions. He looks towards science and technology to improve the world. The former Prime Minister also said the world must make a greater effort to understand the Islamic people, including their culture and religion.
Mr. Bolger held as many meetings as he could during his brief Washington trip, and went onto deliver a speech at Columbia University in New York.
