With the brokering of a truce by Egyptian security sources the question, for both sides, remains: what next?
Opinions are divided as to the likely direction of events from here. The consensus of expert opinion seems to be that neither side wants further escalations of violence but the path is far from clear.
Businessweek remains focused on the posturing of the leaders, quoting Prime Minister Netanyahu's promise that escalation is always possible.
The Times of Israel writes that the possibility of an Israeli ground offensive remains possible and that the IDF is ready for one 'if necessary'.
The New York Times writes that the new power dynamics of the region may be the deciding factor. It notes that relations between Israel and Egypt since the overthrow of President Mubarak are still uncertain. The power relations between Hamas and Islamic Jihad also open up questions of balance.
So we are left wondering: How long will the truce last and what happens next?
