Connie Lawn: American Expert Praises New Zealand
American Expert Praises New Zealand - breaking news from Connie Lawn
Asian and Pacific
expert Ernest Z. Bower had high praise for New Zealand. He
is the Senior Advisor and Director for the Southeast Asia
Program of the Center for Strategic and International
Studies (CSIS) in Washington. The prestigious think-tank
teamed up with the National Press Club on February 13, and
discussed the fact that this is now the "Asian and Pacific
Century," in the words of President Obama and other leaders.
Mr. Bower was delighted when I asked him about NZ - US relations. He called the relationship strong, important, and a leading example of one that makes sense. He said there are a lot of common perspectives. He also said the US needs friends in the region, and "NZ pops out on the top of the list; it is a natural friend." He thanked NZ for "being with us in every major conflict." Mr. Bower added, he "would like to renew our allied relationship with NZ." (NZ is officially considered a friend, but not a full ally, dating from the time of the nuclear disputes in the Reagan Administration. Still, officials admit there is increasing military and intelligence sharing between the US and NZ). The nuclear issue remains an irritant to some in the US, but is put to the side. President Obama says he wants to dramatically reduce America's nuclear stockpile, but that might take generations, if it is ever possible.
New Zealand officials have often expressed positive attitudes. They say the NZ - US relationship is excellent and grows stronger all the time. Trade prospects also continue to improve.
