US senator threatens Pakistan with war 26 Sep 2011 A high-profile American senator has said that the United States should consider military action against Pakistan if Islamabad continues to sponsor militant attacks against US troops in Afghanistan. "The sovereign nation of Pakistan is engaging in hostile acts against the United States and our ally Afghanistan that must cease," said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Associated Press reported Sunday. Graham warned that Pakistan should choose between supporting the Haqqani militant network and helping the US fight al-Qaeda [al-CIAduh].

Terrorists 'R Us: American citizen killed in Kabul attack 26 Sep 2011 An American citizen has been killed during an overnight attack on a compound believed to house the CIA station in the Afghan capital, Kabul, US embassy spokesman says. "An Afghan employee of the US government carried out the attack and was killed," AP quoted Gavin Sundwall as saying on Monday without giving further information. Citing US officials, the report said that the building where the attack took place is a CIA office -- a facility previously known as the Ariana hotel.

'CIA compound' attacked in Kabul 26 Sep 2011 Gunfire was heard from inside a Kabul compound reportedly used by the CIA in what appeared to be the latest in a series of insurgent attacks on targets in the Afghan capital. Afghan interior ministry spokesman Siddiq Siddiqui said police had heard "a couple of minutes" of gunfire from inside the Ariana Hotel compound around 9.15pm (local time) on Sunday. An Afghan government source told the AFP news agency that the Ariana compound was used by the CIA.

US-led soldier killed in Afghanistan 26 Sep 2011 Another US-led soldier has lost his life in a bomb attack in southern Afghanistan, NATO has said in a statement. The soldier was killed on Monday, the Western military alliance said without giving further details about the nationality of the soldier. The latest death brings to 38 the number of foreign troops killed in the war-torn country so far this month, AP reported.

Two US-led troops killed in Afghan war 25 Sep 2011 At least two foreign soldiers serving with US-led NATO military alliance have been killed in separate incidents in the troubled eastern Afghanistan. The fatalities were caused on Sunday due to the detonation of improvised explosive devices (IED), Xinhua reported, citing a statement by the forces. The alliance withheld further information, including the nationalities of the soldiers.

5 NATO Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan 23 Sep 2011 Five members of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) died in separate incidents in Afghanistan on Friday. Two of them were killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in southern Afghanistan, while three others died as a result of "non-battle related injuries" in the western part of the country, ISAF said in separate statements.

US-led forces kill 19 Afghan civilians 26 Sep 2011 Afghan officials say at least 19 civilians have been killed during a military operation carried out by US-led forces in troubled eastern Afghanistan, Press TV reports. The head of the provincial council of Afghanistan's eastern province of Nuristan said on Monday that the deadly operation had been conducted by foreign forces last Wednesday. Similar operations by US-led troops in eastern provinces of Wardak, Logar and Paktia left at least 12 people dead and injured several others on Sunday.

Four NATO tankers destroyed in Pakistan 26 Sep 2011 Militants have destroyed four NATO tankers in Pakistan's southern province of Sindh transporting fuel for US-led forces in neighboring Afghanistan, Press TV reports. Pakistani officials said militants opened fire at a convoy of NATO oil tankers in Shikarpur town in Sindh Province on Monday. The tankers were set ablaze in the assault but no casualties were reported.

Family of Afghan journo killed by US military seeks asylum in Australia 19 Sep 2011 (AM) TONY EASTLEY: The family of an Afghan journalist, killed in an attack near the main Australian base in Afghanistan, is seeking asylum in Australia. Omed Khpulwak was shot dead by US troops in July. His relatives have refused compensation from the US military, but are seeking sanctuary in Australia, after receiving anonymous [Blackwater?] threats... Yemeni cameraman for Iraq TV killed in Sanaa --News director: Yemeni cameraman who works for Iraq's state broadcast died after being shot during his coverage for protests in Sanaa 24 Sep 2011 A Yemeni cameraman working for Iraq's state broadcaster died on Saturday after being shot days earlier while covering protests in Sanaa's Change Square, the channel's news director told AFP. Hussein Yahya al-Wadhaf, 25, had been working with Al-Iraqiya TV for a year, according to Abdul Karim Hammadi. He was shot on Monday, Hammadi said.

Mission accomplished! Iraq Completes Deal to Buy F-16s 26 Sep 2011 Iraq has finalized a deal to buy advanced U.S. fighter jets, officials said. Iraq has yet to publicly announce completion of the deal to buy 18 F-16s, but officials in Washington said an initial payment of $1.5 billion has been received. The deal is considered sensitive in Iraq, and the Pentagon and State Department have declined to comment until Baghdad makes a formal announcement.

Pentagon to Help Defend Cyber Networks --So far, the trial program involves at least 20 defense firms. 26 Sep 2011 As hackers and hostile nations the US launch increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks against U.S. defense contractors, the Pentagon is extending a pilot program to help protect its prime suppliers. That program could serve as a possible model for other government agencies. It is being evaluated by the Department of Homeland Security, as part of a potential effort to extend similar protections to power plants, the electric grid and other critical infrastructure.

Six Men Charged With UK Terror Offences --A seventh man was arrested on Thursday and continues to be questioned. 26 Sep 2011 Six men have been charged with terror offences a week after they were arrested in a major police operation in Birmingham. Four of the men are accused of preparing for an act of terrorism in the UK. Two face charges of failing to disclose information. They were held as part of an operation carried out by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, which was said to be unarmed, pre-planned and intelligence led. [I sincerely *doubt* the latter.]

U.K. charges 6 in alleged terror bomb plot 26 Sep 2011 Six men have been charged with involvement in a terror-bomb plot, police announced on Sunday. The arrests last Monday of the six Birmingham-area men were part of a "major operation" by the West Midlands counterterrorism unit, the West Midlands police department said.

100 local agencies take part in terrorism drill 24 Sep 2011 Operation Mountain Guardian held a terrorism-based emergency response exercise at various locations in the Denver metro area on Friday. First responders from 100 different agencies tested residents with loud noises, simulated weapons, smoke, emergency vehicles and other actions. The exercise is designed to be a learning event for regional first responders to test their capabilities in a scenario that will involve a terrorist-driven catastrophic situation false flag.

TSA worker charged in murder of co-worker 23 Sep 2011 A top Transportation Security Administration official is in jail, charged with killing another TSA employee. The murder case is in Mississippi, but the federal security official and accused killer was recently stationed at O'Hare. Ruben Benitez had moved up quickly in the ranks of the Transportation Security Administration at O'Hare Airport. He was eventually made a TSA manager in Chicago, then promoted to the No. 2 TSA spot in Mississippi, where police believe an affair with an underling ended badly.

Flammable gas detected in Fukushima pipe --TEPCO: Reactor explosion 'unlikely' 24 Sep 2011 Flammable gas has been detected inside a pipe linked to a nuclear reactor at Japan's crippled Fukushima atomic power plant, its operator said Saturday. Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) was unable to identify the gas but nonetheless said it was unlikely there would be an explosion in the reactor. A TEPCO spokesman said workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant measured a 100-percent flammable gas in a pipe connected to the power station's reactor number one.

Austrian Hacker Group Publishes Police Data 26 Sep 2011 A group of Austrian hackers has published the names and home addresses of nearly 25,000 police officials. According to Austrian officials, the data published as a searchable database on Twitter contained private information of more than 24,938 law enforcement officials ranging from beat officers to senior commanders. Austrian authorities said the police data was published by a domestic hacker group known as 'AnonAustria', the Austrian branch of the global hacker collective 'Anonymous.'

Suspected Anonymous hacker refutes charges 26 Sep 2011 A 47-year-old homeless man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he joined in an Anonymous-organised cyberattack that temporarily shut down servers in Santa Cruz County, California. Chris Doyon was arrested on 22 September and is being held until a bail hearing scheduled for Thursday in US District Court in San Jose, California, his lawyer, Jay Leiderman, told ZDNet UK's sister site CNET News on Friday. The indictment alleges that Doyon, using the nickname 'Commander X', was part of an online protest organised by the People's Liberation Front - also allegedly associated with Anonymous - that took place on 16 December, 2010.

Probe urged as OnStar is watching even former users 26 Sep 2011 Your OnStar-equipped car can share an awful lot about your driving habits -- even if you're no longer an OnStar customer. A senator from New York has asked the Federal Trade Commission to open an investigation into vehicle tracking by General Motors' OnStar division. Two other senators called for the company to explain and reconsider its tracking policies. OnStar, which provides a variety of services including vehicle diagnostics, driving directions and automated 911 calls to owners of mostly GM vehicles, recently announced that it reserves the right to track and sell information about vehicles' location and speed even after the driver has cancelled the service.

AP: NY Senator says OnStar invades privacy 25 Sep 2011 The OnStar automobile communication service used by 6 million Americans maintains its two-way connection with a customer even after the service is discontinued, while reserving the right to sell data from that connection. U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York says that's a blatant invasion of privacy and is calling on the Federal Trade Commission to investigate. "OnStar is attempting one of the most brazen invasions of privacy in recent memory," said Schumer. "I urge OnStar to abandon."

Obama raps Perry as gov 'whose state is on fire, denying climate change' 25 Sep 2011 Per the AP, President Obama got in the trenches tonight at a re-election fundraiser, taking on the Texas candidate: President Barack Obama is swiping at Texas Gov. Rick Perry, criticizing him as "a governor whose state is on fire, denying climate change." Obama also poked at the audience reactions at recent GOP presidential debates, singling out those who cheered at the prospect of someone dying because he didn't have health insurance - and those who booed a gay service member. Ottawa sit-in to protest federal support of oilsands 26 Sep 2011 Environmental groups are hoping to trigger what they call the "largest civil disobedience action in the history of Canada’s climate movement" Monday in Ottawa - a sit-in on Parliament Hill to protest federal government support of Alberta's oilsands. Australian crocodile turns himself orange 25 Sep 2011 A crocodile, known as Snappy, who lives in the city of Geelong, near the Australian city of Melbourne, has suddenly and unexpectedly turned orange. The eight foot crocodile saltwater began to turn an interesting shade orange, causing his keeper Tracy Sandstrom, who runs a mobile reptile display called Roaming Reptiles, to fear for his health. It turned out the crocodile, who sleeps in a heated bath at night, had been chewing on the water pipes, damaging the filter.
