Prime Minister John Key's weekly press conference focused on transport problems around the Rugby World Cup opening in Auckland.

Key was keen to emphasise all successes of the Cup opening weekend but emphasised the problems for a "small number" of people were unacceptable and that ministers had been "keeping close" with Auckland Transport and the council to see they did not recur this weekend with a sold out game and Che Fu playing on the waterfront.

He said he had "exactly the same" problem at the FIFA World Cup due to a plane breakdown.

The Prime Minister did not want to attribute blame, but it was the responsibility to the 'delivery agents' rather than the Rugby World Cup Minister, suggesting everything in the Government's areas of responsibility had gone well.

He said he was sorry it did not work for a group of people.

Key had opening the press conference noting cabinet agreement to fund a settlement in the sleepover carers claim. Also discussed were matters around rebuilding from the Canterbury Earthquake, compensation packages and insurance. My Key did not have on new EQC liabilities following a recent supreme court ruling.

Other matters included the treatment of Mark Taylor, who is accused of terrorist connections, negotiations around the Criminal Procedures Bill, and investigations into Australian solidiers taking drugs in New Zealand (of which Mr Key was unaware).
