Rugby Night at the NZ Embassy Washington DC

Rugby Night at the NZ Embassy Washington

Report - By Connie Lawn.

There was excitement and loud cheers resounding from the New Zealand Embassy in Washington, DC, Friday night (Saturday NZ Time). About 200 people attended the event, which commemorates the games in NZ. Among them were at least four Ambassadors from participating countries - including the Ambassadors from Australia, Canada, and South Africa. NZ Ambassador Mike Moore is in NZ, attending meetings and viewing some of the games live. But he was well represented by his beautiful wife Yvonne ( who had just returned from NZ).

Pictured standing next to a ice sculpture of the RWC Trophy are: Jane Coombs the Acting Ambassador of the Embassy (centre), Michelle Parish the Public Affairs Director (left), and Lyndal Walker, the Counsellor and Counsul General.

The hostesses for the evening included Jane Coombs, the second in command or DCM, and Public Affairs Director Michelle Parish.

The food was lavish and delicious. It was the finest spread I have ever seen at a NZ Embassy Party! It was wonderful to sit outside, under a full moon, and eat and talk to new friends.

The games were shown on large screens throughout the Embassy. The Opening Ceremonies were fascinating to watch, and the guests joined in the singing of the national anthems of Tonga and NZ. I personally always well up with emotion and tears when I hear the NZ National Anthem, especially when surrounded by Kiwi friends whom I have known for years.

During the event, there were some chances to donate money to the Christchurch Earthquake Funds.

But, basically there was a great time for sport and fellowship. There was the knowledge this is the 9/11 anniversary weekend, and we all knew we were in an historic place, and a historic time. We were thankful the Rugby event was held in peace and joy. The only combat was channeled to the field of sport.
