GNS Science: Monday’s Quakes Not On Port Hills Fault, Scientists Say

Scientists analysing Monday’s quakes in Christchurch say they occurred on a fault structure 2km to 3km south of the Port Hills fault that ruptured on February 22, 2011.

There have been six aftershocks of magnitude 4, or greater, on this fault, or very close to this fault, since February. The Richter magnitudes for Monday’s two main quakes were revised up to magnitude 5.6 and magnitude 6.3 as more data was incorporated into the analysis. More>>

Gordon Campbell - On the quakes in Christchurch In the short term, as CERA chief Roger Sutton claimed yesterday, the collapse of some 50 already-damaged buildings in the Christchurch CBD red zone will speed up the rebuilding process. In similarly upbeat vein at yesterday’s post Cabinet press conference, Prime Minister John Key said that yesterday’s quakes will make it easier – not harder – to decide which areas of the city can be rebuilt, and which cannot. His Cabinet colleague Gerry Brownlee said much the same... More>>

Gordon Campbell - On Rebuilding Christchurch (And Rupert Murdoch v The RWC) So the long awaited report on land remediation in Christchurch by the consulting engineers Tonkin and Taylor has been delivered to Prime Minister John Key and Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee – who incredibly, have chosen not to share the contents of the report with the people of Christchurch. Breaking News Report - By George McLellan: 2:20pm Monday June 13, Christchurch has been shaken by a series of earthquakes the strongest being magnitude 6.0. Buildings have been evacuated across the city and there are reports of at least six serious injuries. The earthquakes are the strongest since the February 22 earthquake which resulted in devastation across Canterbury. Emergency services have been stretched to the limits in attempting to cope with the aftermath of today’s quakes.

Power was cut to approximately 10,000 customers in the east of Christchurch ranging from Heathcote to Brooklands including Bromley, Belfast and Marshlands following the 5.5 magnitude earthquake at 1pm today. Power was also lost for a short time from the Dallington zone substation affecting people in the Dallington and Avonside areas. Power from the Dallington substation has now been restored.

Following the Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake which struck at 1.20pm the University of Canterbury evacuated students and staff from all buildings. Students, who had been studying in preparation for mid-year examinations are worried that the university will remain closed. Third year law student Courtney Martyn told Scoop that she thought the building she was in was going to collapse: “it felt like the building was going to collapse, this will be enough to send the people of Christchurch over the edge”.

Exhibitions: "The Healing Power Of Art"

Any artist can use rage or destruction as inspiration for art. And the result tends to be ‘shock art’ – art you can’t ignore because it gets in your face. But in the face of ongoing aftershocks, including the recent hits on 13 June, something that has come up again and again is the antithesis: the healing power of art. More>>
