Werewolf Edition 23 Now Available! - Keeping Score On RWC Costs

From Werewolf Editor Gordon Campbell

http://werewolf.co.nz/

Dear Scoop Reader,

Hi and welcome to the 23rd issue of Werewolf. In this month’s cover story we weigh up the costs and rewards of the Rugby World Cup and wonder why - in the current climate of austerity - central and local councils alike have decided that when it comes to rugby’s needs, money is no object. Rugby so the cliché goes may be our national religion but (arguably) taxpayers and ratepayers shouldn’t have to pay for the rites of this chosen religion, especially when the rituals involve men in shorts packing down in scrums.

In this issue, we also examine the strong evidence that President Barack Obama has for some time been the biggest international gun-runner in US history – and conclude that this ‘ Warrior President’ is no friend of peace , not when there are defence industry jobs and foreign policy influence to be gained from peddling weapons of war to his country’s so-called friends. In her Left Coasting column, Rosalea Barker bravely analyses the bitter struggle that several US states are now engaged in, as they try to collect sales tax revenue from giant online vendors such as Amazon and e-Bay. In James Robinson’s Letter From America column he finds surprising signs of life in the famously dead-on-its-feet profession we call journalism. Apparently, it is still alive – but that life Jim, is not as we know it.

The vital signs of the planet are also a chronic source of concern and in recent weeks, almost every man, woman and child in the country has had the chance to see and hear the climate change pioneer scientist Dr James Hansen. In this issue, Werewolf reports back on its (all too brief) interview time with the great man.

New Werewolf writers are always welcome – so huzzahs to Alice Galletly, who has captured in print the terrific Auckland singer/songwriter Tiny Ruins ( known to her friends as Hollie Fulbrook) right on the eve of her debut CD release, and tour. Definitely worth checking out. In another pop culture neighbourhood entirely, Mark P. Williams (now based in Wellington, but he hails from Norwich) turns a sharp eye on Grant Morrison’s past and current manipulating of the Batman mythology. Among other things, Williams examines what this may herald for superhero narratives in general.

Elsewhere in Cartoon Alley, we feature new work by Brent Willis and Tim Bollinger. This month, our music column The Complicatist looks at how the unlikely trio of Tyler the Creator, Tegan and Sara and film director Lars von Trier have revitalized the old argument about whether artists should be held responsible for what they say and do. In the Classics children’s book column this month, we re-visit the Cold War mindset that permeates Madeleine L’Engle’s barmy 1962 novel, A Wrinkle in Time. Thanks as always, to Alastair Thompson for helping me post this online. Werewolf is a thank you to Scoop readers and is intended as an outlet for local writers and artists.
