Scoop Audio: Phil Goff on Darren Hughes
Labour leader Phil Goff held a press conference today at parliament, following revelations that senior MP Darren Hughes is being investigated by the police. Mr Hughes has been put on leave until the matter is resolved. Mr Hughes has assured Mr Goff that he has done nothing wrong.
He declined to comment on the substance of the allegations, which he said it was up to the police to investigate. He said Mr Hughes had told him about the matter "a couple of weeks ago" and that journalists have told him the matter became public through a source in Beehive.
Mr Goff assured journalists that if police found substance in the complaints Hughes would be held to the standards Labour demanded of disgraced National MP Richard Worth.
Earlier, media had been told that Labour knew nothing of the allegations, but Mr Goff said the press officer had not spoken to him about the matter.
