1210 - Pacific Partners Study, Brian Lynch NZIA

As you’re no doubt aware the most powerful woman in the world - no not Wonder Woman - Hillary Clinton touched down in a very windy Wellington this morning. She’s here for 3 days to decide if she likes New Zealand (God I hope so!) eat barbecued meats with the Prime Minister and sign something called the Wellington declaration. That particular piece of paper will confirm closer diplomatic and defence ties between New Zealand and the US. My first guest (above) is part of a joint study between Washington’s and Wellington’s premier think-tanks - the Centre for Strategic and International Studies and the NZ Institute of International Affairs. “Pacific Partners” is a major review of the bilateral relationship between our two countries, and will make recommendations on ways to elevate that relationship. Friendship bracelets perhaps?

1225 - Don Brash on 2025 Taskforce Report #2

At 12.25 the man who’s leading the government-appointed task force to figure out ways to bring us closer to the Australian economic powerhouse will be on the line. Don Brash - who many will remember as the former leader of the National party - heads the 2025 Task Force, and they’ve just dropped their second report. It recommends a lot of what they’ve already suggested: scrapping the minimum wage, reducing government spending, making greater use of the private sector in the public one, and opening our arms to foreign investment. Unsurprisingly the left - unions and the Labour party - say Dr Brash is re-hashing tired neo-liberal policies, and the task force should be disbanded. What says he? Find out at 12.25.

At 12.35 Peter Griffin from the science media centre takes us skipping merrily down the lane of knowledge - which is very windy indeed! Today on Dear Science Peter will look at what Mrs. Clinton’s visit means for scientific cooperation between us and US, the creation of the biggest marine reserve in the world, and new research out of Otago that could have a remarkable impact on those recovering from Strokes.

1245 - The Wire’s Big Thing: COP16 in Cancun

Then at 12.45 the fourth installment of this week’s “Big Thing” where we on the Wire look at one tricky issue across each of the week’s shows. This week we’re looking at the COP16 meeting that starts November 29 in Cancun, Mexico. It’s the major international climate meeting - the sequel to last year’s fairly useless meeting in Copenhagen. Today we hear from the one country with the most to lose from climate change - the whole country. This morning I spoke with Andy Teem, a senior policy advisor to the government of Kiribati - a tiny, low-lying pacific atoll nation. Kiribati is this week hosting the Tarawa conference, in the lead up to COP16, the aim of which is to bring the major world players together to see first hand the effects of unchecked climate change, and get them to agree on what they agree on before Cancun.
