Thousands protest loyalty oath bill

Both Ynetnews and Haaretz covered last night's demonstration in Tel Aviv against the new loyalty oath. Ynetnews' coverage below is reasonable but there are three powerful paragraphs in Hebrew which are missing in the English. [There are also some minor bits missing but these cover things like slogans that rhyme beautifully in Hebrew but miss their punch in translation.] The missing paragraphs are added below. Also below is a note on a few missing significant words in the English Haaretz

Bit in caps is missing from English Haaretz version:
"The statement 'The Arab citizens of Israel are the true demographic threat' was not uttered by Rabbi Meir Kahane or Avigdor Lieberman, but by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Jerusalem conference. Two years ago, the idea of population transfer was a slogan of extreme right-wing parties. A month ago it was the subject of an official speech by the Foreign Minister in the United Nations, A WEEK AGO IT WAS THE SUBJECT OF A PHYSICAL EXERCISE OF THE SECURITY FORCES. [Internal Security Minister Yitzhak ] AHARONOVICH’S ANSWER TO OUR QUESTION IN THE KNESSET RAISES A BIG CONCERN. HE SAID THAT THE INTERMEDIATE RANKS WANTED TO DEAL WITH A REALISTIC SCENARIO." Khenin said.
"Friends, the population transfer has turned from a nightmare into an operational plan. Against this we stand here today."

The following does not appear to be in the Ynetnews article:
(rough translation)
MK Dov Hanin told the demonstration: "All of us are facing the danger of the loss of democratic space. Population transfer is being turned from a nightmare into an operative plan. We are taking a stand here against it. This murky wave which started with Arabs has now reached Jews dare to think differently.” MK Haim Oron [and Meretz leader-tr] lashed out at government ministers: "An evil spirit lurks over the country and don’t confuse it with the hovering wind that accompanies last of the summer’s heat waves. It is the evil spirit that Minister [Isaac] Herzog stated hovers over the margins of the government. If Bibi, Lieberman and Yishai are at the margins, then who is at the centre? Ehud Barak? This centre is the heart of this government. " [Herzog said that fascism lurks at the margins of Israeli society -tr.]

The government is an insane extremist organisation

[Journalist] Merav Michaeli also attacked the government: "We have a government that is an insane extremist organisation, that threatens both the Jewish and Arab segment of society and is apt to destroy society and its democratic character. Their world is warped, inverted and dangerous. We have a prime minister and ministers who do not miss any opportunity to scares us with fear. Remember How Bibi once said 'They are afraid?’ Today we say to him 'We're not afraid. Stop trying to us. ‘"

Writer Sefi Rachelevsky, one of the initiators of the Declaration of Independence from Fascism, also attended the demonstration:" The fact that this rather spontaneous demonstration, which was not publicised in the media in any organised manner beforehand, but had nevertheless swept thousands of participants along, speaks for itself. There is a very large community here that desires an Israeli democracy. I'm glad that hundreds participants signed the Declaration of Independence from Fascism. We are talking about the struggle for equal rights and the absolute refusal to identify with the state that pretends to be Israel."

Protest over the amendment to the Citizenship Act continues – some 6,000 people on Saturday evening gathered in Tel Aviv's Gan Meir to protest of the loyalty oath bill, which was approved by the government on Sunday.

The participants, who marched toward the Sarona compound, carried signs reading: "Lieberman's voice, Netanyahu's hands", "Fascism and ethnic cleansing are standing proud" and "together we'll protect democracy."

Leading the procession were Members of Knesset Dov Khenin and Muhammad Barakeh (Hadash), former MK Mossi Raz (Meretz) and Peace Now Director-General Yariv Oppenheimer.
