Canadian Mountain Holidays Heli Skiing
Canadian Mountain Holidays Heli Skiing
-by Connie LawnSomeday, if we are lucky, we will live our dream of skiing down some of the greatest mountains on earth. We will join groups of lucky skiers and snowboarders and take helicopters to the top of various peaks of the Canadian Rockies. We will ski with great skill and rhythm down slopes of virgin powder, without fear of being hit by crowds of other skiers or boarders.
At night we will stay in luxurious lodges, with gourmet food, hot tubs, fireplaces, and plush, comfortable beds.
Several hundred people got a taste of this on October 12, when Canadian Mountain Holidays held an event introducing its new DVD and describing its programs. It took place at the Army Navy Country Club, outside of Washington D.C. Hostess and CMH representative Barb Follett treated us to a Canadian Thanksgiving dinner, and showed the new video. She was joined by two top staff members and guides from Canada. Their new video shows some truly dramatic and steep terrain but they also show instructions on powder for those who are not used to it. They were much less intimidating, and encouraged many of us to believe we really could participate in Canadian heli-skiing.
Some of the people there had taken part in numerous trips. One exceptional couple in their mid sixties had taken four of the CMH trips, and have another planned this year. CMH says 3,500 guests have skied with them nine or more times, and 70% of the heli-skiers are returning guests.
The trips are not cheap - costs vary depending upon time of the year and size of the group. You have to fly to Canada on your own. After that, all costs - including helicopter transportation, lodging, equipment, instruction, guides, and food, are included in the calculation. Skiing is assured for most days, except for times the weather makes it unsafe to fly. In some cases, refunds can then be made.
The first step is to check out CanadianMountainHolidays.com, and look at some of the videos. Then decide if the adventure of a life time is waiting for you.
