Scoop Images: It might seem unwise to play with an electrical appliance in the rain, but that didn’t stop Transport Minister Steven Joyce and Wellington City councillors from getting up close with Mitsubishi’s new electric cars at their official launch in Civic Square Thursday.
A grid of charging stations is being installed in Wellington in order to trial the cars over the next two years.
Wellington City mayor Kerry Prendergast said Wellingtonians cared about the environment and used public transport, but cars were still a major part of the city's fabric.
Wellington would be an ideal place to trial the vehicles because of its short commute times, she said.
Joyce added that early adopters of the new iMiEVs would not be required to pay road user charges.
The trial is sponsored by Meridian Energy, Mitsubishi Motors, New Zealand Post Group and The Wellington Company.
