[Middle East News Service Comments: The full story of last night's (Melbourne time) clashes between Lebanese Army and Israeli forces is still unclear. I have seen enough evidence to suggest that the Israelis were operating on the other side of the fence. However, the Blue Line (the official UN marked border) and the fence do not always coincide. There it at least one report from a UN source that the Israelis while using a crane on the wrong side of the fence were still well south of the Blue Line – Sol Salbe.]

Three Lebanese soldiers, a Lebanese journalist and one Israeli officer are reported to have been killed in fighting on the Israel-Lebanon border.
Military sources say there was an exchange of gunfire between Israeli troops and Lebanese forces on the northernmost part of the border near the village of Adaysseh.
A Lebanese army officer says the violence flared when Israeli troops tried to uproot a tree from the Lebanese side of the border.
But Israel says it was clearing trees on its side of the line and says the incident was a pre-meditated ambush by Lebanese snipers.
"It was a planned ambush by a sniper unit which carried out the shooting toward [Israeli army] commanders, who were clearly standing by a post in our territory," Israeli Northern Commander Major General Gadi Eisenkot said.
