1210 - Bus Lanes in Auckland - John Lister
At the top of the show we’ll hopefully get some closure on this bus lane brouhaha that’s been brouhaha-ing for the last month or so. According to some news reports this morning, public anger has forced the council to take another look at the rules around driving in bus lanes. They say they’ll consider ways to help drivers better understand those rules, and trial some marker things to clearly show the magic 50 metre mark from where you’ll be allowed to enter these hallowed bits of road. Ok, sounds reasonable - but does the new stance negate at all the millions in infringement fines they’ve already handed out?
1225 - Joe Carolan of Unite Union
Unite on Campus union is hosting a “fightback” rally here at Auckland University this evening which will be focused on planning direct action in response to the government’s proposed changes to employment law, which include extending the 90 day work trial to all workplaces, restricting union access and making sick workers produce doctors’ notes. There’ll be speakers from Unite, the National Distribution Union, the engineering, printing and manufacturing union the EPMU as well as Sue Bradford and Chris Trotter. This morning I spoke to rally organiser Joe Carolan the campaigns manager for Unite who spoke about how what kind of action the unions are planning in relation to these changes which he calls “major attacks on workers rights”.
1235 - Counterclockwise
Lyndon Hood takes a break from leaking confidential government documents while humming Lady Gaga tunes to join us for Counterclockwise today. He’ll be talking barefoot politicians, overseas investment and a new issue of Werewolf. A-wooo!
1245 - Earthquake Testing
And then at 1245 we’ll hear about an ambitious project involving a bunch of woolly scientists and a very large drill. In what's been called the holy grail of earth sciences, scientists will drill deep into New Zealand's Alpine fault to research how earthquakes are created. The 'Ground Breaking' (har har) work is to be undertaken in a unique spot on the West Coast which project co-leader Dr John Townend, of Victoria University says provides "an amazing natural laboratory". Hunting for earthquakes then! Sounds cool - Dr John will be on the line at the end of the show to tell us exactly how cool.
