Why New Zealanders want an ultra-fast broadband network.

Every week, we will bring you a selection of comments from Vector’s fibre to the door website.

Here’s what Kiwi’s have had to say this week in support of Vector’s effort to bring fibre to the door of Aucklanders …..

I support Vector's bid for the "Fibre to the Door" contract for Auckland. Based on historical evidence, in New Zealand and abroad, it is important to maintain direct public interest in such infrastructure projects. Considering the length of time taken to realise the Government's LLU legislation in increased availability of broadband, and the smaller than expected impact on pricing and broadband penetration a community interested party is most likely to carry the project to a well developed and effective conclusion.

I live only 20 km from the centre of Auckland and there is no decent broadband. This is not what you would expect in a developed country, is it?

I live in Swanson and can't get broadband, I am trying to run a website business and this is very frustrating to know that Telecom will not provide broadband.

I support fibre to the door as I work from home and want the ability to communicate with my clients and family around the world at speeds that people in Asia take for granted. I also think it is important for NZ to be part of the next generation networks currently being deployed globally. Plus I want to be able to choose my video and TV content from wherever I like not just NZ and SKY.

I work from home via the net, we have a laptop connected to the TV for TVNZ ondemand, etc. There are 4 PC's in the house which the kids go mad on YouTube, Facebook and online gaming. The connected world is coming and we need to be there.

Fibre has transformed business services and opportunities in countries like India. Anything less than fibre to the door is false economy and risks us failing to keep pace with the world. Really we should be trying to leap to the next technology beyond fibre to secure ourselves on the world stage. We can't remain farmers forever. It will be a shortsighted decision to shoot our economy in the foot by restricting the fibre roll out to anything less than each user’s router.

Browsing online should be as smooth as browsing a PC; after all, many people spend more time doing that these days... My PC can keep up with me, but already ADSL cannot. We need to start laying fibre infrastructure now, especially if it's going to take 7 years to reach 30-40% of Auckland. Many people will come to want it before they can get it... Many possible applications of the internet are currently limited by bandwidth...

Fibre optic being laid out to the door will support higher speeds which New Zealand is lacking all over the board, compared to other developed countries. New Zealand can only benefit from this service. Running copper from the street to the door would continually suffocate our needs for more efficient data requirements, associated with newer technologies and services being introduced daily. Fibre optic will also be the most effective investment for NZ to make to be able to support future levels of band with travelling to and from homes.

Because the broadband we have now is extremely slow and I want the best for my child and her learning making it fun and fast to learn of the internet rather than sitting and waiting and waiting, prolonging the homework until she is bored by the whole thing.

If we want to stay in touch with the rest of the world we need this. Our industry is slowly becoming more and more web based and many others like us need to keep the leading edge when it comes to technology. Failing to do this now would be like leaving Auckland’s infrastructure the way is now, if it was supporting 7 million people.

New Zealand needs to look to the future, things that cost too much today will always cost more in time (look at public transport, building a subway or tramway system in Auckland now is seen as impossibly expensive, yet many European cities that are less populous have these systems, because the spent the money when they had the chance). Copper technology is reaching its limits, even ADSL2 is very limited compared to speeds offered in most American cities, and being a small adaptable and smart country we need to be able to move quickly to keep up.

Its hard enough trying to get youth playing outside, let along fighting with them for internet surfing time. I'm fed up with the slow wireless connection that I have now in the office. Giving us ultra-fast broadband would solve many unnecessary arguments!

New Zealand is position extremely well to take advantage of many I.T opportunities particularly in respect of software development. If NZ as a nation want a tangle alternative to our dependency upon primary industries, high speed internet to-the-door is imperative if we want to compete on an even footing with the rest of the world. New Zealand has a huge developing I.T talent pool but we are at risk of losing that talent overseas due to poor infrastructure and policies.

NZ needs faster and more reliable internet to enable businesses to perform more efficiently. A huge percentage of businesses in NZ are small and home based businesses which will directly benefit from faster broadband.

About The Vector Fibre Debate

The Government plans to give New Zealand a complete fibre to the door ultra-fast broadband network. Vector thinks that’s a great idea and is hoping to help them do it and Scoop.co.nz also thinks its something well worth discussing.
