The 95bfm Thursday Wire with Hamish Fletcher

The 95bfm Thursday Wire with Hamish Fletcher 25/02/2010

Coming up on the show today:

12:15 Paul Walbren Auckland Regional Council - Planning for population growth

There can be no doubt that Auckland is where people both overseas and domestically are flocking to. Latest figures from Statistics New Zealand predict that by 2031, 38% of the population will be based in Auckland. That will be just under two million people. It raises the question, can Auckland handle this rising population growth? Do we have adequate infrastructure, and how are we upgrading that infrastructure to ensure services are maintained. Joining me to discuss Auckland's future is Paul Walbren Planning committee chairman on the Auckland Regional Council.

12:30 Greg O'Connor President of the Police Association

There have been a group of vicious attacks on Police officers over the past week, calling into question whether Police are viewed with the authority they once held. Do we need harsher penalties for those who assault officers? What else needs to happen to ensure the danger police face is minimised? Greg O'Connor joins me to give his view.

13:15 Jacinda Ardern Labour's Youth Justice Spokeswoman

Youth offenders have just completed National's first military style rehabilitation problem and the Labour Party is once again questioning the government's scheme. Harshly debated at select committee last year, Labour's Youth Justice spokeswoman Jacinda Ardern is once again criticising military activity camps, claiming they are unnecessary. She joins me to discuss Labour's opposition to MAC or military activity camps.

The highlight for Peter was technology which allows FM radio to be used to send out data to OLPC laptops in rural towns. We'll also go over the latest from the knowledge hub that is Sciblogs.co.nz

13:40 Papercuts with Pennie - Thanks to MagNation

Last week Pennie gave Apartmento the somewhat difficult score of 6/5. This week listen to see if Pennie gives Grey Magazine such lavish praise.
