Honduras has suffered a great deal of political strife over the last five months following the deposing of ex President Manuel Zelaya by the Honduran army. Following a de-facto government, Honduras has elected a new leader this week, the conservative wealthy rancher, Porfino Lobo. Despite claims that elections were fair, the American Continents remain divided in accepting Lobo as a legitimate leader. Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela all refuse to acknowledge Lobo as democratically elected; however, others such as The United States, Canada and Columbia accept his appointment as the premier position of the Honduran political system. Joining me on the Wire to discuss the elections is Marco Caceres, editor of the website Honduras This Week.

We constantly hear in the news claims of New Zealand’s drinking problem and of New Zealand having a culture of binge-drinking that is extremely harmful to many, especially young people. Those in the hospitality industry normally downplay the severity of the problem and say that most New Zealanders drink responsibly and it is only a small number who are ruining it the rest. However, a new letter to the Law Commission urging tighter controls on the sale of liquor, signed by more than 300 leading New Zealand doctors and nurses, claim up to 700,000 problem drinkers need help, and to discuss New Zealand’s drinking problem, I’ve got Professor Doug Sellman, head of the National Addiction Centre on the show.

In Dear Science (your weekly snippet of Science and Technology), Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre will be on the show to discuss how a New Zealand spammer has been fined $21.2 million dollars in the United States. As well as this, we'll go over reports that genetic modified material has escaped from Lincoln University and Peter will also talk about the uses the rocket launched into space from Mercury Island yesterday could have for New Zealanders.
