1220 - SIS looking for WMD at NZ Universities? Dr Tom Ryan, Tertiary Education Union

At the top of the show around 1220, I'll be joined on the line by (above). He's been one of the lone voices we've heard from over the last 24 hours with regards to an SIS request for Universities to alert them to any illicit activity that could be related to the manufacture ofWMDs . It sounds quite bizarre, and has been dismissed as far-fetched and paranoid by some. The organisation representing the country's eight Universities - The New Zealand Vice-Chancellor's Committee - won't say anything other than what's in their 4 line media statement. The SIS won't talk at all, and one peace group who've already been quoted told me this morning it was a sensitive issue, and they'd already said too much. What's going on? Dr Ryan says the SIS request is unethical and undermines the academic freedom of our Universities.

1240 - Pay Equity - $4 billion invoice

At 1240 one for the ladies. We'll hear from Angela McCleod, president of Business and Professional Women of New Zealand. She's spearheading a campaign to get pay equity back in the government's sights. Today they're presenting the Minister of Labour (of she turns up) with an invoice for $4billion - or the amount of money women are missing out on a year due to the wage gap. Angela says we can't keep avoiding this conversation, and addressing the gender pay gap could SAVE the country tonnes of money.

1300 - AgResearch GE Livestock, Claire Bleakley GE Free NZ

At one I'll be speaking to (above) about a plan by the country's largest crown-owned institute AgResearch to alter the genetic make-up of livestock in order to produce a super-milk. This would involve mixing human and animal DNA, a move GE Free New Zealand calls "unbelievable". Their organisation won a high-court injunction in June preventingAgResearch from pursuing similar applications. The crown-owned institute IS fighting that injunction, and has gone ahead and made this most recent application anyway. They say the research will put NZ at the forefront of an industry with a massive international market.

1320 - Counterclockwise

Lyndon Hood joins us at 1320 for counterclockwise where he'll be contemplating the tricky business of writing headlines and teasers about theEmissions Trading Scheme. How well have the re-evaluated costs been reported?

1340 - Drop the Rate, Mate!

And at 1340, Sarah Phillips will be in to talk about the ongoing campaign with the catchy name (above). Launched in August, the campaign is a protest against the extortionate mobile costs we pay in New Zealand. Basically, if you’re on Telecom and you text or call a friend on Vodafone, Vodafone charges Telecom for receiving the text. They want the Government to step in, but need your help. And at 1340, Sarah will be here to seek said help.
