Werewolf Returns - Issue #5 Out Now - Lycanthropes Rejoice!

Dear Scoop Subscriber,
Now I’ve returned from Europe, Werewolf will resume its usual monthly appearance with the full moon. Supposedly,
journalism is meant to evaluate how power is being used and abused, and this issue contains a couple of interesting
variations on that theme.
This month's featured interview is with Commerce Minister Simon Power and reveals that NZ is moving to adopt Australian
tools and attitudes in how business should be regulated.
In her story about loan sharks, Catriona MacLennan slams the failure of the Clark and Key governments to control loan sharks, while Denis O’Reilly feels encouraged by the current government’s plans to lead and co-ordinate action against the drug, P.
Taken together, is this balance? Not really. The more basic point is - how can governments see the need to respond to
the damage being done to communities by P, while continuing to ignore the damage being done (often to the very same
communities) by loan sharks ? National and Act plan to vote down Charles Chauvel’s private members Bill that aims to
exert the most basic forms of control on loan sharks. Why ? Good question.
This issue also contains the first of a planned series on science research and ethics by Melody Thomas, and a piece by Brannavan Gnalalingham on the flaws in the judging of the Nobel Literature Prize.
There is also a piece on left politics in Portugal, interviews with Wellington musician Disasteradio and film-maker Niki
Caro. Nicola Kean talks about life in Burma under the Junta, Rosalea Barker profiles the peculiar race for the next
Governorship of California and Lyndon Hood ponders the parallel universe which is the news.
In Cartoon Alley, Tim Bollinger reviews comics from New Caledonia, and more besides. Next month, I’m hoping to revamp
and expand Cartoon Alley considerably.
