Bye Bye Bradford
It came as a surprise
to many when Green MP Sue Bradford announced her resignation
on Friday. She decided it was time to go after being passed
over for the party’s co-leadership earlier this year.
She’s been hugely polarising during her decade in
parliament, but despite what you think of her politics,
there is no denying that she is hugely respected in the
hallowed halls. Bradford talks to Kim Choe about her reasons
for resigning, and her intended return to the
grassroots.

Gaddafi: Class Clown or Cultural
Caricature?
In his first address to the United
Nations in 40 years, Libyan leader and African Union
president Muammar al-Gaddafi has accused major powers on the
Security Council of betraying the principles of the UN
charter. Gaddafi's speech, dress and rumoured accommodation
choices had him portrayed by the media as the comic relief
character of the 64th General Assembly. Is this a legitimate
portrayal of a nutty world leader? Or is it a caricature of
cultural racism to cover an opponent of conventional wisdom
who delivers some uncomfortable truths? NZ Herald columnist
and Unite Union secretary Matt McCarten thinks the latter,
and tells Kim Choe why.

Hot Wok: News from Asia
The Tuesday
Wire’s Asia Correspondent Marc Checkley gets out of bed an
hour earlier (thanks to daylight saving) to give us a
rundown of things happening in the region. Today: China
turns 60 and claims it’s going green(er), and Singapore
devises a typically new-fangled way to help its elderly
pedestrians cross busy roads.

The Green Desk
Simon Miller speaks to
marketing consultant Kath Dewar, who is running an upcoming
short course at the University of Auckland. Called 'How to
Market Sustainability', its particular focus is
‘greenwash’. What is it, and how do we avoid
it?
