The Wednesday Wire Hosted By Paul Deady

1220 - Murray McCully on Fiji Expulsion

The big news today - Fiji's been kicked out of the Commonwealth, again. They missed yesterday's deadline imposed by the group of former British Colonies to set an election date for next year. Instead, Fiji says it's committed to a 'democracy road-map' that will sort out an ethnic based voting system, and have elections in 2014. At 1220 I'm hoping to hear from Foreign Minister Murray McCully. He's said there's little New Zealand can do to force the country back to democracy anytime soon, and what's needed now is a "period of patience".

1240 - Denis O'Reilly, Community Advocate and Black Power member: Insignia ban

At 1240 we delve back into Wanganui's gang patch by-law that came into force yesterday. Their mayor Michael Laws says it will mean Wanganui residents can feel safe on the city's streets, but critics argue it's a violation of free-speech and human rights, and nothing more than a publicity stunt by Laws. Laws, publicity stunt? No.... I'll be talking with (above) about the issue, and why he says the whole debate is a massivewaste of time.

1300 - Gambling sinking lid, Graeme Ramsey, CEO Problem Gambling Foundation

Yesterday was gamble-free day around the world, and the Auckland City council commemorated the occasion by suggesting we remove our 'sinking-lid' policy on gambling venues. Basically this means the council is unable to grant new gaming licenses, so when gambling venues closed, we reduce the overall number of them in our city. But the proposed change would effectively cap the number of venues - if one closes, another can open (but it must have fewer gaming machines, and not be in a lowsocio-economic area). The council will discuss the proposal today, and we'll hear from (above) at one.

1320 - Counterclockwise

Mr Lyndon Hood from the crack team at scoop.co.nz joins us for counterclockwise today around twenty past one. We'll be taking a look at some of the procedural weirdness around last week's release of the review on an Emissions Trading Scheme, and how the National lead government finds itself without any friends to get their version of the scheme off the ground. The clock is ticking...

1340 - Youth (advocates) against (phone) Fascism PArents Inc. CEO Bruce Pilbrow

Then at 1340, we'll hear from the CEO of Parents Incorporated Bruce Pillbrow. They're concerned that the Commerce Commission's proposed mobile phone regulation could have a negative impact. They're mostly worried that if mobile termination rates are regulated, it'll mean kiwis will have to pay to receive calls and texts. Parents Inc thinks this could prevent families from keeping in touch, and consequently, from keeping children safe. They want the CommerceCommission, who are discussing the issue today, to think carefully about unintended consequences on families.

Aucklanders can tune in at 95 on the FM dial.
