The Monday Wire Hosted By Paul Deady

1230 - Green MP, Keith Locke

At half past 12, I'll be speaking with Green MP Keith Locke about the allegations of war crimes by our very own SAS troops. A report in yesterday's Sunday Star Times alleged that in 2002 our SAS troops handed over around 70 prisoners to the United States at the Kandahar Detention centre, aka Camp Slappy, where they were said to have been tortured. The NZ troops never got names or dates-of-birth of those prisoners, and an expert in international human rights who said this could amount to a war crime under the Geneva convention. Keith says any decision to resend the SAS back to Afghanistan should be delayed until we can say for sure whether there was any mistreatment of those prisoners. Both major parties say there's no story, and the allegations were dealt with when they happened, and are confident there was no breach of responsibilities. We'll hear what Keith has to say at half twelve.

1250 - Burnham Military Camp, Commanding Officer Major Cate Linton

At 1250, (above) will be on the line from the military capital of NZ, Waiouru. Major Linton runs the Limited Service Volunteer company at the Burnham Military company in Christchurch, and they've been in the news recently because the government likes what they do, and wants to throw more money at them to help out-of-work youngsters. So what do they do? Do they fall under the whole "boot-camp" scheme designed to rehabilitate troubled youths? Are they just a recruitment driver for the armed forces? Neither of the above apparently. So Major Linton will join us at ten to one to explain the whats, whys and hows.

1315 - Mountain Safety Council - avalanche danger, Gordy Smith

At 1315, I'll play an interview I did this morning with (above), in the wake of 2 avalanche deaths in less than 2 weeks. Gordy told me with the risk of avalanche extremely high, the back country of centralOtago should be thought of as being pretty much off-limits. So skiers and snowboarders, LISTEN IN, this interview could save your life.

1340 - e-Campaigning in the 2008 election, Dr. Bryce Edwards

Then at 1340, (above) from the political department at Otago university will be on the line to talk about ePolitics, or more specifically, who best used the internet during last November's general election. Bryce blogged about the issue at his website liberation.typepadcom where he undertook an analysis of the only real academic enquiry he could find - in Peter John Chen's book Informing Voters? Politics, Media and The New Zealand Election 2008. Fascinating stuff!

Aucklanders can tune in at 95 on the FM dial.
