The Thursday Wire Hosted By Hamish Fletcher

Coming up on the show today:

You may have heard that the parliamentary bill banning gang patches in Whanganui passed its third reading yesterday and will mean that it will soon be illegal to flaunt gang patches and regalia on Michael Laws’ streets. However, many are sceptical that this will solve any of the gang problems plaguing Whanganui and that this piece of legislation will not be the silver bullet the public may be praying for. Joining me on the Wire at 12:15 is Associate Professor of Sociology Greg Newbold, an expert on crime and gangs down at CanterburyUniversity. We’ll discuss the bill and what impact Professor Newbold thinks it will have.

Then at 12:40I’ll play an interview I did this morning with Bill Moore from super market giant Progressive regarding loss leading on the sale of alcohol. Mr Moore said that Progressive stopped loss leading practices 15-18 months ago and that the chain tries to be a responsible retailer. Listen in, to find out if you agree with him.

At 1 o’clockI’m joined in the studio by two comedians from Joint Ventures and Joint Repairs, a collective performing at this year’s comedy festival. They’re show is entitled ‘The Burn’ and is focused around a dvd store in Hell where “The selection is limited, the late-fees are depressing and the adult section is softcore at best”. They’ll give the run down on their act and what people can expect from their performances.

Then at 1:30 Peter Griffin from the Science Media Centre joins me on the line from Wellington for Tech Talk –you’re weekly look at science, technology and the Internet. Today we’re discussing the court battle between Vodafone and Telecom and Telecom’s decision to delay the launch of its XT network until the end of May.

Aucklanders can tune in at 95 on the FM dial.
