1210 – John Banks
He’s been smiling wider than a Cheshire cat, and with good cause. Yesterday’s announcement by the government calling for Auckland to become a supercity with one mayor and twenty councillors has put Auckland mayor John Banks in good spirits. We have a chat with him at 1210 and ask whether consolidating so much power into one position is a good idea and why he seems to be the only one of Auckland’s mayors happy with the decision.
1240 – Willie Jackson
Two seats, three seats, four seats, none. That’s been the debacle facing Maori representation after the official announcement of the new Auckland Supercity. Broadcaster and Manukau Urban Authority chief executive Willie Jackson will be on the phone at 1240 to discuss why the Royal Commission’s report fell on deaf ears and the Government ignored their advice. Willie says it’s easier for Maori to enter parliament than local councils; so why is there so much reluctance to enshrine Maori representation?
1300 – Broadcasting review dropped, Jonathan Coleman
At one I’ll be speaking with (above) about the government’s decision to scrap the previous one’s digital broadcasting regulatory review. In a press release from the minister, he basically says he and communications & IT minister Stephen Joyce are satisfied the current market is sufficiently competitive, and there are “no compelling indications of future issues”. This ‘it’s all good’ attitude does leave one wondering though, what was the whole review about in the first place?
1320 – Counterclockwise with Alistair Thompson
Scoop’s chief editor Alistair Thompson will be on the line at 1320 to add his 2 cents to the changes set for Auckland – which he told me this morning amounts to the Act Party being foisted on Auckland. He’ll also take a quick look back at the distinguished career of Michael Cullen, who announced his retirement from Parliament yesterday, and add to the growing stoush between old-school news merchants and web-based aggregators like Google News.
1340 – Wilkins ice shelf – Tim Naish Director at the Antarctic Research Centre at Victoria University
And then at 1340 I’ll be talking to (above) about the dramatic break-away of the Wilkins ice shelf in Antarctica. Global warming in full effect, and a dire predicator of things to come, according to one scientist who says “change anywhere in the ice sheet poses significant hazards to society”. Shit.
