Auckland– Peter McKinlay, AUT Local Government Centre
director
The Royal Commission report on Auckland’s
governance has finally been released, delivering its verdict
that the current eight councils be dissolved and replaced
with one central body overseeing six local councils. Peter
McKinlay, director of AUT’s Local Governance Centre,
explains how it might work and what some of the
repercussions will be for the region.

Helen @ the UN – Stephen Hoadley, University of Auckland
Associate Professor of Political Studies
Another big
decision announced last week was another worst-kept secret:
former Prime Minister Helen Clark has been elected as the
new administrator of the United Nations Development Plan.
Stephen Hoadley talks about what the role will involve, and
how significant it really is.

Keith Ng f***s Earth Hour
Keith Ng’s post on publicaddress.net caught my eye last
week. A few paragraphs down, in bold letters, it said
‘F*** Earth Hour’. Earth Hour has got to be one of the
most slickly-marketed environmental campaigns, so Keith will
tell us why he thinks the whole thing should go screw itself
in its own bulb socket.
1:20 The Future of NZAID
– Phil Twyford, Labour Associate Foreign Affairs
spokesperson
The Labour Party and several
other interested groups convened a summit on Friday to
address what they say is an urgent matter: National’s
intention to reintegrate NZAID into the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and Trade. Phil Twyford says it will damage New
Zealand’s international reputation and hurt Pacific
nations.
1:40 The Green Desk
Simon Miller
talks to environmental activist Gary Cranston about how to
build a grassroots environmental movement in NZ.
