When I wrote my December 22 article (mixed messages at a time of economic stress – why does the council wish me a Merry Christmas?) I was focusing on council expenditure and identifying spending that I felt was extravagant and unnecessary. But it seems I failed to recognize the council’s novel strategy relating to Christmas. That strategy became visible today (January 21) when I walked to my bus stop, where I discovered that the council’s plan is to extend the duration of Christmas. Almost four weeks after Christmas Day, the council’s Merry Christmas message is still on show in my bus stop. In the centre of the city, I made the same discovery – the council’s Christmas tree banners are still bedecking city streets – I saw them in Featherston Street, Victoria Street, and Dixon Street (though in Lambton Quay and Courtenay Place they’ve been replaced by banners promoting the Rugby Sevens.) Let’s wait for councillors to tell us what benefits the city is receiving from its decision to prolong the city’s celebration of last year’s Christmas.
