Some thoughts on watching the BBC News
There was no warning. The announcer didn’t say, “Some viewers might find these images disturbing. Viewer discretion is
advised.” They simply cut from the studio to the reporter, who was wearing a flak jacket. A little graphic on the top
left said: Local time, 7:01am.
Behind the reporter, in the distance, was a city partially hidden by gentle hills. In the middle distance were two
highways, each with the occasional truck or car going in opposite directions. The sun had just come up and you could
almost feel the coolness of the morning air, and hear the thoughts of people starting their day.
Early morning was everywhere—a soft golden light on the reporter’s face, the sage green of trees in the distance. It
looked like the kind of morning you wake up to and feel suffused with the feeling that all is right in the world and how
blessed you are to be in it, hearing small birds sing, feeling a soft breeze on your skin, feeling a commonality with
your fellow human beings.
That’s all I have to say.
