12:15 The
Immigration Bill: A Human Rights Nightmare
Labour's
Immigration Bill was reported back from select committee
yesterday. Prior to this there were some serious concerns
about how the Bill will affect civil liberties, particularly
with regard to detention rules and the use of classified
information. It remains unclear this morning whether the
committee has made any changes. scoop.co.nz's
political editor Gordon Campbell will join us to discuss the
Bill's workings.
12:30 Fuel for
Thought
Against the backdrop of buzzwords such as
fossil fuels, peak oil, and climate change, the Commonwealth
Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in Australia
convened the Future Fuels forum to address
transported-related issues there. Their recently-released
report had some interesting insights, not least the
revelation that fuel prices will reach an astounding AU$8 a
litre in ten years. I will speak with Energy Futures Manager
Paul Graham.
1:00 Footsteps of
Fire
Writer and news producer Angus Gillies has taken
it upon himself to publish a three volume series called
Ngati Dread, about the little-known Ruatoria
Rastafarians who made their intimidating presence felt in
the East Coast town between 1985 and 1990. Gus will drop in
for a chat about what it was like writing the books and why
he thinks it was so important to document this little corner
of history.
1:40 The Green
Desk
Today Simon will be talking to Kevin Hackwell,
Conservation Manager at Forest and Bird. With the general
rise in temperatures year after year, NZ's native plants and
animals are being forced to adapt to a new ecology. Kevin
will give us an insight into how they are
coping.
