Grunge from the mid-90s assaulted Labour Party congress goers this afternoon in Wellington after a fire alarm was set off by, an as yet unidentified, miscreant. The fire alarm was detonated just as Prime Minister Helen Clark had begun a speech to the party faithful leading to a full evacuation of Wellington's town hall.
Scoop discovered that a delegate from New Lynn had snapped the alleged 'switcher on of the fire alarm'. This holder up of the Prime Minister had gone deep cover to the conference with a jaunty Labour Party red scarf. The delegate was more than happy to pose for a couple of photos but was not sadly willing to hand over their footage of the action that led to a late afternoon tea for all concerned.

Outside the Labour Party conference a small but diverse range of protestors made up in megaphone wattage what they lacked in numbers by haranguing the milling delegates. Some demanded an end to mining in Happy Valley while others called for 'the weed to be freed' others still accused the Labour Party of stifling freedom and a few just looked a little bit menacing with novelty face masks.
Once all the Labour delegates were outside the protestors let rip on their boom boxes with the fiery but somewhat dated rap-rock of Rage Against the Machine. A small amount of shoving broke out briefly between some of the black clad more anarchistically inclined of the protestors and various delegates who called the protestors cowards for refusing to show their faces. While there may have been some hearing loss resulting from the hi-powered megaphones no actual violence broke out. After the fire service gave the all clear party faithful trooped back inside after an robust exchange of ideas. One peeved attendee suggested to Scoop that the protestors must be in the pay of the Business Roundtable.
