Power To The People: Transpower To Increase Capacity Of HVDC Pole 2 - Transpower will increase the south to north transfer capacity of Pole 2 from 500 MW to 700 MW next month by reconfiguring the three operational undersea cables of the inter-island high voltage link (HVDC). In order to increase the capacity of Pole 2, one of the two undersea cables currently connected to the 'stood down' Pole 1, will be transferred to the operational Pole 2 on 13 -17 December 2007. Small Planet: New Zealand Glaciers Shrinking - New Zealand's glaciers are shrinking and twelve of the largest glaciers in the Southern Alps are unlikely to return to their earlier lengths without extraordinary cooling of the climate. Research released by the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research (NIWA) today shows that the volume of ice in the Southern Alps has reduced by about 5.8 cubic kilometres, or almost 11%, in the past 20 years. More than 90% of this loss is from 12 of the largest glaciers in response to rising temperatures over the 20th century. More >> [1]
