2 Women "Wellington" Terror Accused Named

Reported by Spike Mountjoy from the High Court In Auckland

Wellington activists Valerie Morse, 36, and Emily Bailey, 30, can now be named as the two women arrested in Wellington on October 15th as part of the Police's "Operation 8" so-called anti-terror raids.

The two women were remanded in custody tonight to appear tomorrow for possible bail applications. Images and physical descriptions of both women remain suppressed.

Two other accused men - Rongomai Bailey, 28, and Omar Hamed, 19 - both of Auckland have also had their cases adjourned till tomorrow.

Hamed is expected to apply for bail when he appears tomorrow and Rongomai Bailey (already bailed) is expected to seek ongoing suppression of his image.

Media spent much of the day today seeking to remove suppression orders on evidence, names and other matters, and to enable audio, video and images of proceedings.

Also this afternoon one accused from Rotorua had name suppression continued and was remanded in custody to reappear on December 3.

Another accused Auckland arrestee, a woman dancer, was also remanded in custody to December 3. She sought a variation in her bail conditions. These were changed from a 24 hour curfew with a work exemption, to an 11pm to 7am curfew and a prohibition on travel, "south of the Bombay Hills".

Finally at the beginning of the afternoon session two male Auckland "Terror" accused appeared who have name suppression on an interim basis pending a decision on whether they will be allowed leave to appeal to the Court of Appeal. Earlier this week their appeal to keep name suppression was turned down in the High Court by Justice Potter. In doing so she suppressed coverage of the proceedings before her.

Neither of these two accused applied for bail, and both have been remanded in custody to reappear on December 3.
