Washington D.C.’s notoriously hot muggy weather finally broke this morning, just in time for a rally billed as “the historic union of the 9/11Truth, Peace and Impeachment movements”. Organizers had framed it as part of a general strike, but the fact that so many truck drivers tooted as they passed the placard-waving participants demonstrated that though the support is there for the movement, support doesn’t translate into much action.

All of the speakers urged people to take greater action, whether it be to go online and sign petitions or run for Congress against Democrats, who were described by one speaker as “gutless” for constantly giving in to Republican demands for more money for the war in Iraq.

Dave Lindorff said that 9/11 was used in a very cynical way by the Bush administration to roll back the constitutionally protected freedoms of ordinary citizens. He also relates his experience back in 1988 doing a story on nuclear warheads housed at US military base, stressing how difficult it was to get near them. He cast doubt on the notion that the warheads recently transported across the US somehow “accidentally” were put on the B52, as the media has been reporting.

Anthony St. Martin gave a passionate speech about the need for action to be taken in the form of a general strike in the event that Congress does not impeach Bush and Cheney. He has received, he said, the pledges of a few unions in critical areas of the country to go out on strike if the Congressional bill is not passed, potentially bringing commerce to a halt.
The next several days will see the 9/11Truth, Peace, and Impeachment movements working together on strategies to achieve their aims: “a valid investigation of 9/11, an end to the bogus war on terror, impeachment of the criminals in the White House, and restoration of our civil liberties.”
An antiwar march scheduled for this Saturday has already attracted opposition groups such as the Gathering of Eagles, a veterans group, which will line the route the marchers plan to take, the same as they did back in March. A Gathering of Eagles spokesman was quoted in this morning’s Washington Post as saying of their March action, “A prime motivator was to not allow this generation of America’s servicemen and women to be betrayed on the battlefield and at home as happened during and after the Vietnam War.”
