US Democracy in South Asia
By Kamala Sarup
United States Of America is the most democratic nation on respecting human rights and such as freedom. Thank you for
America's interest in Tibetan and Bhutanese refugees in Nepal. It shows America has a great heart. Nepali nationalist
and the patriotic people who believe in a real democracy, press freedom, and human rights are happy about it. Even the
strong democratic and human rights values of patriotic citizens of Nepal, fully support a secular Nepal. Religious
freedom is a real democracy and a wonderful freedom. I think fundamental rights to religious freedom, human rights and
sovereignty is very important in our life.
But I don't understand why leftists group do not support and respect religious freedom and human rights? When leftists
give an anti American, anti Tibetan, anti Bhutanese, anti religious speech, it gives me pain and it hurts me
emotionally. Why leftists never respect religious freedom? As a pure democrat at heart, I wanted to tell to the American
people is a good elected, responsible government will give rights to the people. Why people, especially Nepali people
are suffering badly?. Our great neighbores are on the way to economic prosperity but look at the Nepali people are
crying for freedom, justice, democracy and human rights. As America should know, radical groups can take situations like
that one as a gap for themselves. Do America remember the same happened in Cambodia after the installed a weak leaders.
That turmoil was the chance for Pol Pot to start his horror regime and to find members who were simply disappointed by
the political and economical circumstances.
American has to remember, in Germany after World War 1 when the country was destroyed and none had any hope for the
future. Then people elected a man who promised them a better future and it was Adolf Hitler. The rest is known. I am
convinced that like the Khmer Rouge, Adolf Hitler or the leftists would have no chance if a society is solid. I wanted
to American people, violent group have killed people from a one year old baby to 90 years old men. They murdered a whole
village:a journalist, children and women.
Democracy and freedom and human rights are very hard to establish and even harder to hold onto. Leftists always hate
democracies and refugees. They're messy to deal with. the best solutions are always in hands of the people. All those in
need should get help and to respect the rights of all the people,. In a real democracy the people have a real say and
get great social and political benefits.
When the failed leaders cannot agree on ABCs. Trust and working relationship between the people and the failed political
leaders will be at a low point. It is up to the people to define the framework within which to seek assistance. And
leftists have a track record of converting aspiration to reality. I am a bit surprised to read daily news that if the
leaders still don't seem to know what is urgent and priority. What I am pointing out about democratic and patriotic
unity is also equally important issues to defend freedom. The trouble of modern era is based on differences, and people
are suffering for no valid reasons and I think the very foundation of this problem underlies in lack of good leadership
and we need a revolution to sure that good leaders is uncorrupted from the politics, every people deserve quality
leaders.
The US has always supported the cause of democracy and human rights in South Asia, and particularly in Nepal, Srilanka,
Bhutan, and Afghanistan. India is already an well established nation of more than a billion people, where democracy has
taken deep roots with more than six decades of democratic exercises. Pakistan is a different story altogether. Pakistan
has not been able to foster the growth of democracy and freedoms. It has been ruled by the army, sort of a military
junta , during most of its history. Pakistan and Bangladesh are now Islamic Republics. Bhutan is a Buddhist nation,
similarly Srilanka is a Buddhist nation. The United States presence in South Asia has increased dramatically with the
war in Afghanistan.
Today, the United States is committed to fighting terrorism around the world. It is in the best interest of all of
mankind to safeguard the freedoms and rights of the people.
In the early eighties there were not too many people from Nepal, and the South Asian presence in the United States was
mostly that of Indians and people from Pakistan. There were very few people from Bangladesh, and some from Nepal,
Srilanka and almost none from Bhutan or Maldives. Today all that has changed, the South Asian presence in the United
States has undergone a dramatic change, with immigrations, business , and students pursuing higher education in the many
colleges and universities in the US. The United States of America is a nation of immigrants. This openness to accept all
people from around the world is the beauty and strength of America. This humanitarian approach to life, liberty and the
pursuit if happiness is the bedrock of the US nation.
I also would like to thank the US Ambassador in Nepal, Mr. James Moriarty of having done a wonderful job in Nepal. He
has been critical of the Maoists and have asked them to renounce violence, and change their ways, by joining the
political mainstream. The United States is carefully watching the developments and changes taking place in Nepal. The
Maoists will have to completely surrender their arms, renounce violence and seek forgiveness and amnesty from the people
of Nepal.
The US, China and India have repeatedly condemned the violence, killings, extortion, abductions, terror tactics and
outright human rights violations and criminal activities of the Maoists.
A patriotic Panday said" I request all Nepali people to be united, defend our pride, our heritage, continue with the
good works that our fore fathers, have taught us. Let us all join hands and seek their blessings to help build a
beautiful Nepal where the people can live without fear, with peace and security, trust and where the rule of law
prevails. Let us put an end to all violence. This is the responsibility of the Nepali people.
Long live American freedom. Long live American democracy.
