Will New Zealand be overrun with swarms of intimadating bandannaed gang members or will long haired emo kids be banged up in jail for life for being unfashionable – this was the question no-one was left asking following the Prime Minister's press conference. The Prime Minister spent quite a bit of time explaining how officials were busy pondering how to curb potentially intimidating gang members. One potential way forward was to beef up laws relating to people looking intimadating/different/unfashionable.
Due to allegations of chicken molestation videos and cocaine snorting police dismembering cats coming via Ian Wishart's Investigate magazine and website this interesting legal conundrum took something of a backseat. While the Prime Minister accepted that some sort of nasty video/film had played at current Police Commissioner Howard Broad's pad in Dunedin in the early 80s she was unwilling to believe that this one fact made the rest of the allegations in Mr Wishart's magazine credible.
Ms Clark pointed out that some of the allegations had been made by a woman in Christchurch Women's Prison. According to the PM allegations of improper behaviour in Dunedin had been made to current Health Minister Pete Hodgson who had then asked his Labour colleague and Christchurch central Mr Barnett to visit the woman behind the allegations. Apparently the woman had not been willing to put her name to any of the allegations. The PM pointed out that her MPs were not necessarily 'sleuths'.
The matters raised in the latest Investigate magazine have however been referred to the Police Complaints Authority. The PM also implied that former Policeman and current Private Eye Wayne Idour may have had something to do with the allegations contained in the June 2007 issue of Investigate. Mr Idour was revealed late last year to have been employed by the Exclusive Brethren to dig dirt on Labour Party MPs.
Listen to the full press conference – the Prime Minister begins answering questions at around 11:05
