Brutal Dictator Dies - Reforming dictator whose grip on power in Chile persisted well beyond his brutal 'war against communism' - General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte seized power on September 11, 1973, in a military coup against the Chilean Government of President Salvador Allende. He ruled until March 11, 1990, when he handed over power to President-elect Patricio Aylwin. Pinochet became an international symbol of Latin American military dictatorship, though for many Chileans he was the man who saved Chile from a Marxist takeover and presided over an economic restructuring that set the country firmly on the road to sustained and impressive economic growth.
