Last evening in the Banquet Hall of the Beehive Labour's 90th birthday celebrations kicked off. All over New Zealand this weekend further celebrations are being held to celebrate New Zealand's longest running political party.
The Banquet Hall was a feast of colour with many party stalwarts making certain to come dressed in bright red. The evening's MC was Labour's youngest MP Darren Hughes. Both the Prime Minister Helen Clark and the Party President Mike Williams gave speeches. The PM's speech covered the party's history with especial emphasis placed on the foundation of the party and its ascension to power during the great depression however the 1980s whizzed by in a couple of sentences.
Scoop went and chatted to few of the older delegates who had flirted with 'Mr Anderton and his Alliance party' in the early 90s but who assured Scoop that they were perfectly content with Labour at present. While most people enjoyed the evening the excitement was evidently too much for one hard working Minister of Justice who fainted.
