Stateside With Rosalea: Feedback

Every now and then people write to me about the opinions I express in Stateside. Here is some recent feedback.

On my opinion that Ron Dellums’ entry into the Oakland mayoral race was part of “same old same old” politics:

As a volenteer who worked in the Dellums' campaign and who met Dellums for the first time, I suggest that you may have misread the situation.

Please note that 3 Major letters were submitted as part of the draft effort.

1. A letter by 40+/- Aisan American- Pacific Islanders
2. A letter by 40+/- Latin-Americans
3. A letter by 40+/- African Americans

I worked side by side with several White Americans
Not one of us is in the in crowd.

A progressive Positive Vision that is based on small "d" democracy is what it is all about.

"Subjected to" the Moses movie? 9 million viewers tuned in.

And on my jaundiced view of the fuss that was made of an autistic high school student who was allowed to play only in the last few minutes of the final game played by the team he helped manage, this from the father of an autistic son: (the first two paras quote what I wrote.)

“I am curious, jaundiced: Why wasn't he playing for the team all along? To me, the story is just another example of prejudice excluding someone from using their skills and talents, and then when they're given the chance to do so, the credit goes not to them so much as the far-sighted and prejudice-defying authority figure that allowed the chance to happen.

Folks, patting yourself on the back for enabling someone to triumph over all the obstacles you've put in their way is NOT a good look, no matter how warm and fuzzy it makes you feel inside.”

Sorry but you are way way off base on this. I played basketball for Boston College (currently tanked #11 in USA college basketball), and I am the father of an Autistic 8 year old son. It is your belief system that is “just another example of prejudice.” When you have a team, it is a team. The manager is part of that team. The kid was a part of the team with or without the uniform. He caught fire which is great, but let’s give the coach a break. He is there every day with all the kids. I see every week with my son (http://dustynyac.blogspot.com/2005/10/nyac-saturday-morning-program-2005-06.html) coaches that do not know how to handle him. They just do not know, it does not make them wrong.
