Scoop Audio: Sharples On Not Supporting Mapp's Employment Bill
Scoop very recently popped into Maori Party co-leader Dr Pita Sharples superbly decorated office and had a short korero with Dr Sharples on a number of topics including Dr Wayne Mapp's controversial Bill that would allow employers three months grace in which to fire employees.
Initially Dr Sharples had supported the legislation but had since changed his mind. As well as employment Scoop also touched upon the vexed issue of private prisons. Dr Sharples was a champion of New Zealand's only privately run prison Auckland Central Remand (ACRP) which is now back in the state's hands. Dr Sharples expressed surprise that the same company (Wackenhut now GEO) that ran the allegedly humane ACRP was also the same company that ran the squalid Australian refugee detention camps.
Also touched upon in Scoop's interview with Dr Sharples was anti-smoking and dog chipping legislation and inter-parlaimentary relations between the Maori Party and other political parties.
Listen to Dr Sharples discussing Employment legislation, Anti-Smoking initiatives, private prisons and Tariana Turia attending ACT's recent conference
