Kamala Sarup: When Maoists Killed My Own Uncle

Will my uncle who was killed by Maoists live again? What are the current programs of the Maoists for those people who lost their lives? What is the role that we victims can play in the process of justice for our dead people? What should be the immediate role of victims? Will Maoists bring alive my uncle so his small children can be happy?

We were waiting the arrival of our uncle Prem, so that we can give all children their Dashai presents. Most family were at home on the day Dashai (Nepali festival). Since the family is scattering to various places.

"I don't care whether or not I can visit outside the city, but I want to be able to walk through the market during the day without any fear of danger, such as a bomb explosion, etc". If I come to village, assuming security in village is ok so I can walk. It is necessary to live near the library because it does carry the important newspapers". My uncle talked with me before he came to my place.

"I now will give the presents to you all. I started some important books as presents. I bought books. However, book buyers need world globes". Uncle further added.

But at that time, unfortunately, the ongoing political crisis has made the situation worse and my uncle was killed. Since he was killed I left my village.

Violence crisis have made people, even die hard optimists. One goes to work with the doubt threat he will return safe and sound in the evening.

I think, we should support such efforts which will help people to develop peace building.

I know, there have been hundreds of insurgency wars fought all over the world since the end of World War Two (1945) and many more before that.

It is very rare to actually win a war against an insurgency. Most insurgents end up winning the war.

The British (or British advisers) have actually "won" the most insurgency wars, and we can count on the fingers of the hand total number, and have fingers left over. That is how difficult it is.

I also believe, some of these insurgencies have gone on for many, many years like some more than thirty years. They are almost always solved by bringing the insurgents into the political process in some kind of power-sharing arrangement.

I believe, any war against insurgents involves two things: The war of violence and the war of public opinion.

We can be "winning" the peace by bringing them in mainstreams media. We should do not restrict information if we are the government side.

Whichever side is more effective at convincing more people wins the public opinion side of the peace. If we win the public opinion side of the peace, almost always, we will win the "peace". That is, eventually peace will be made on terms.

We should try to make the best of every day of our life for peace.
