Scoop Audio: Harawira Declares War On Big Tobacco
"We don't smoke this shit - we sell it. We reserve the right to smoke it, to the young , the poor the black and the stupid."
Such are the words of the tobacco industry. Well - today we launch a campaign to rid our country of bastards who think like this, the companies they work for and the poison they sell us.
This was the start of a speech given by Maori Party MP Hone Harawira – and then he got angry. Mr Harawira was speaking on World Smokefree Day at a Hui organised to draw attention to the number of Maori who die each year of tobacco related diseases – and to do something about the situation. One idea being proposed by Mr Harawira was to get tobacco out of New Zealand by the year 2010.
