This afternoon ICANN CEO and President Paul Twomey and ICAAN Chairman Dr Vint Cerf - widely regarded as the father of the Internet - held a press conference at the conclusion of the 25th ICAAN meeting in New Zealand this week. Cerf described the meeting as "very productive", helped along by New Zealand's natural candour.
"We had good bandwidth here," said Twomey, "but we're in Wellington."

As well as dealing with ICANN's structure and priority areas, a major issue was planning to deal with new kinds of Distributed Denial of Service attacks which have targeted the Domain Name System. Twomey, likening normal levels of Internet traffic to waves on a beach, describe denial of service attacks as a Tsunami and these attacks ""
The conference had also investigated the implimentation of the Domain Name System in different languages and also the ".xxx" top level domain, as well as the development of general guidelines for admitting new top level domains.

Questions and discussion covered the roles ICANN is taking in an expanding Internet, with more and more devices and types of devices (with the need to work in different languages) and deeper penetration of society - as well as the need to deal with public policy issues, and broader issues for other group which arose from the conference.
ICANN is the international organisation which coordinates and advises on the underlying structures of the Internet.
