U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Christopher Hill held a press conference this afternoon at the US Embassy. Scoop attended and asked the most senior U.S. diplomat to visit New Zealand in recent times whether NZ had officially raised the issue of U.S. Human Rights abuses at Guantanamo Bay during his visit.

(UN Press Release 16 February 2006: HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERTS ISSUE JOINT REPORT
ON SITUATION OF DETAINEES IN GUANTANAMO BAY

Mr Hill was due to meet with Prime Minister Helen Clark immediately following his press conference. At this stage it is not known whether she raised the issue of Guantanamo Bay or not. Earlier today the Green Party suggested that she do so.

"This is a perfect opportunity for New Zealand to raise the harsh treatment of Guantanamo Bay prisoners, and lack of due process, which is no longer acceptable to the international community - as seen in a recent UN Commission on Human Rights report," Mr Locke said.
