Computing: State Services' Open Source Report by Microsoft Lawyers

- The State Services Commission should be condemned for using a law firm with strong links to Microsoft to prepare a report on rival software systems using open standards, Green Party Information Technology Spokesperson Nandor Tanczos says. The report on the legal implications of open source software was prepared by Chapman Tripp, a law firm which has done extensive work for Microsoft in the past. "Asking Microsoft's general counsel and IT advisor to prepare what is supposed to be a neutral guide to open source software is just scandalous," Nandor says. See... Sudan Rife with Distrust of UN and the West, Al Qaida Involvement Feared

    - Distrust of the United Nations and warnings of Al Qaida involvement are growing in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, the UN’s envoy to the troubled African nation warned today, saying that both are linked to the uncertainty surrounding peacekeeping operations in strife-torn Darfur… “The climate in Khartoum against the UN is heating up very strongly…threats, there are warnings, there is talk about Al Qaida. And there is fear in Khartoum, that is being used, that the UN transition will be not a UN transition but a conspiracy which will bring Sudan into the same situation as Iraq a couple of years ago,” Mr. Pronk said. SCOOP EXCLUSIVE: Adding Insult to Injury for Katrina Survivors

    - Wash. DC. - Two court decisions this weekend create barriers to voting for hurricane Katrina survivors spread around the United States. The U.S. District Court of Louisiana (Eastern) denied a lawsuit that sought to delay elections and allow special measures to enable voting by several hundred thousand displaced New Orleans evacuees. Advancement Project, a civil rights organization, filed the suit with ACORN (a national community rights organization) and individual voters. See... Aussie Grass Remains Greener

    - National's Immigration spokesman, Lockwood Smith, says net outflow of people to Australia has more than doubled in the past three years. He is commenting on yesterday's release of the latest external immigration figures. "For the year ending January 2004, New Zealand lost a net 10,221 people to Australia. In 2005 that increased to 15,547, and in the past 12 months (to the end of January), that figure has leapt to 21,439." See... Exodus to Australia doubles [1]
