Health: Is The Media Asking The Right Questions Regarding Herceptin?
A powerful media campaign has
pushed for a new cancer drug Herceptin to be subsidised,
notably, TVNZ's Close Up program. But is the drug safe? A
clinician has told Scoop that Close Up presenter Susan Wood
inaccurately asserted Herceptin's success rate. And why
isn't anyone asking the manufacturer of Herceptin just why
the 'wonder drug' is so expensive? See... Will

Dale Mills on Australia's Taser Plans
- Australia's police is becoming increasingly militarised, with NSW Police leading the way in trialling Taser stun-guns. Taser are hand-held guns that fire two metal probes attached to copper wires, delivering a 55,000-volt electric shock that lasts for five seconds. Victims typically fall to the ground and involuntarily urinate, with all major muscle groups going into spasm. The guns have an effective range of 6.4 metres, with the possibility that inaccurate shooting will hit bystanders. See... Australian Police To Use Taser Stun-Guns [1]

Right on UN Guantanamo Report
- Guantanamo must be closed, and its prisoners either released or given a fair trial in the United States under US law. That is the recommendation of an investigation conducted by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. Why? Apart from general principles of justice and a respect for human rights, the UN has three reasons. See... No Right Turn: Guantanamo Delenda Est [1]

"Three months ago the government’s
agenda for this three year parliamentary term was set out in
the Speech from the Throne delivered by the
Governor-General. That speech and that agenda were
optimistic and realistic, and visionary and practical.
Labour and the Progressive Party are not in government to
manage the status quo – it’s never good enough. We are in
government to make a difference for the better. We want our
country to be more affluent and dynamic." See... Prime
