Election Law: Did Labour Get Value For Its Alleged Overspend?
Scoop Report: Kevin List writes
that in a surprise twist to the ongoing saga of Election
2005 Labour looks to have spent well in excess of National
in election advertising. According to the Electoral
Commission not only did Labour spend more than National on
election advertising they spent more than they were legally
allowed. The Electoral Commission is referring the New
Zealand Labour Party to the police as it believes the party
has overspent its election expense limit and committed an
offence under the Electoral Act. See... Labour

Report on Australian Immigration’s Powers to Deport
Long-Term Residents Released
- Prof. McMillan
said: ‘A decision to remove a person who has grown up in
Australia and has established family and social networks in
this country can have a profound and enduring consequence
both on them and their family and friends. My investigation
aimed to determine whether visa cancellation decisions of
this kind are being made to the highest standard of
procedural and substantive fairness. The investigation did
not question the underlying policy of protecting the
Australian community from non-citizens who have committed
serious crimes, and are likely to reoffend.’ See... Aust.:

Cindy
Sheehan: It's Not Enough to Criticize
- I am standing here today to say "enough." It is not enough to "criticize" the President's policies while you are handing him more money to fund his policies. It is like giving an addict more money to purchase drugs when you would like him or her to quit. It is not enough to criticize the President's policies when more and more flag-draped coffins are coming home each day and more families are being devastated by these policies while other people are putting food on their tables and becoming fabulously wealthy off of Casey's flesh and blood and the sorrow of scores of others. Bill Rosenberg on the WTO Ministerial
- The official line from the WTO’s Director-General Pascal Lamy is that the 6th WTO Ministerial conference in Hong Kong, was a modest success, and that its scant results recognised that this is a “Development Round”, putting the developing countries to the fore. Yet the process and outcome leaves developing countries not only seriously disadvantaged but with more and more rungs sawn away from the development ladder. Most are expressing disappointment. See... Culture-Clash
- Paul Buchanan writes that the
publication of cartoons depicting the prophet
Muhammad have raised the spectre of a deepening cultural
clash between Islam and the West... The issue is one of
pre-modern versus postmodern perspectives on life... One
person’s blasphemy is another person’s parody.

Employment: Air NZ Cleaners Prepare To Fight For Jobs
- Air New Zealand aircraft cleaners are gearing up to fight plans to contract out their work. Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national secretary Andrew Little said that the airline appeared determined to replace all 124 specialist aircraft cleaners with outside contractors. “Mediation to settle this dispute has failed,” he said. “The company appears to be hell-bent on replacing its loyal and hard-working cleaners with contractors – probably as a cost-cutting move.” Mr Little said that the union had lodged court action over the proposal. Nats Want Stun-Guns But Advise Caution

National's Simon Power says it is essential that trials of
stun guns by police should be well monitored and
transparent: “As long as we continue to have unarmed police
in New Zealand we should not, at this point of time, be
ruling out using stun guns. However, National wants to
ensure there is a thorough and well monitored trial of the
guns, and full transparency in the decision-making process."
