Remembering Edward Said

It's been two years since his death
And I still mourn today
A wise intellectual
Who was never afraid
Ahead of his time
An innovator with conviction
Fighting for his beliefs
Without political restriction
Books like Orientalism
Set the stage for understanding today
A critic and a kin
A swordsmen with the pen
A fighter among men
True heart with so much to defend
And when it came time he put it back into our minds
What about the Question of Palestine?
The Culture and Resistance
His insistence that we understand
I take my hat off to this man
For the stands he took
For the hands he shook
For the books he left behind
A one of a kind
A pianist and husband
A father and a friend
A genius and compass
Directing students to years end
A mentor without knowing
An image ever glowing
And a voice carrying the words Palestinians needed to hear
And this year more than ever
The cause yearned for him to be by its side
So many left speechless
After the news came that he died
So we remember Edward Said
His words are his legacy
We’ll continue his vision
And hold close the memories
The voice
The words
The emotion
That brought out the best in our society
