Jon Johansson Digs Deep Into MMP Strategy

- In a few days New Zealanders will go to the polls with our eclectic mix of motivations. Some of us will vote according to the party we identify most strongly with, or against, some of us will vote in self-interest, some will vote with their hearts, some will choose in anger, some in impatience, and others with ambivalence, perhaps even profoundly so given the nature of this desperate campaign. Satire: Twas The Night Before Polling And All Through The House…

- It is spring, moonless night in the Parliament Buildings, banner- headline black, the carpetways silent and the scowling grandstanders'- and-liars' chambers breathing night-time down into the breeze-mumbled grounds. And all the people of the lulled and dumbfound House are sleeping now. See... Lyndon Hood: Under Bee Hive [1]

Devil In The Detail Or Have Some Parties Blown Their Campaign Budgets? -

Kevin List reports that in the 2005 election both the National and Labour parties are likely to push election advertising spending close to its limits. So far as Scoop can determine this is the first time this has happened in a New Zealand General election. However the penalties for a political party blowing their multi-million dollar election advertising budget are paltry. See... Kevin List: The Best NZ Democracy Money Can Buy [1]

Remi Kanazi On The 4th Anniversary Of 911

On September 11th, 4:30 am, the commemoration of America’s loss was just hours away in Manhattan as I stared at the lot where the twin towers had once been. Dozens of camera vans waited roadside for the morning coverage. Just to the right I saw the “tribute in light,” two blue shafts beaming stories high into the sky—the representative of the strength and magnificence of the twin towers. As I imagined the old skyline of my city, I realized something. America hasn’t learned a thing in the last fours years. See...
